Hair tourniquet syndrome
A frequently unrecognized and potentially devastating form of penile strangulation is that caused by human hair. Hair tourniquet syndrome frequently occurs during the time period when post partum mothers are experiencing increased hair loss. The majority of cases are thought to be accidental, however possibility of child abuse should be considered in every case.

Tourniquet of hair and thread fibres may become tightly wrapped around a child's digit. The resultant ischaemia may lead to tissue necrosis and autoamputation. An 11-week-old infant presented with swelling and discoloration of the left second toe because of hair thread tourniquet syndrome. This was treated by urgent surgical release of the constricting band, with a successful outcome. The authors stress the importance of recognising this rare condition and of prompt, complete, surgical release.
